A single, ornate empty chair sitting in the center of a large, dark, empty concrete room. A single spotlight shines on the chair. In the shadows on the walls, there are silhouettes of people whispering. The atmosphere is cold, isolated, and threatening. High contrast, noir style.

Let’s talk about fear. I don't mean the kind of fear you get when you hear a noise in the basement. I mean real, deep, stomach-turning fear. The kind that keeps you awake at 3:00 AM wondering if your best friend is about to stab you in the back. That is exactly what is happening in Chinese politics right now. The man at the very top, Xi Jinping, appears to be shaking in his boots, and his reaction is causing a massive China military purge.

We act like these world leaders are tough. We see them in their nice suits, standing in front of flags, looking serious. We think they have it all figured out. But they don't. Most of the time, they are just as clueless as the guy messing up your order at the drive-thru. The only difference is that when the leader of China messes up, people disappear.

According to U.S. intelligence reports regarding Xi Jinping paranoia, the leader is scared. He thinks people are out to get him. And you know what? He might be right. When you run a country by telling everyone to shut up and listen, you never really know what they are thinking. You create a room full of liars who just nod their heads to save their own skins. That is a lonely place to be.

So, what does a scared boss do? Does he try to make friends? Does he try to relax? No. He starts firing people. But this isn't like getting fired from a retail job. You don't just hand in your badge and walk out. In China’s leadership, getting fired is a lot darker. It is called a "purge." That is a fancy word for cleaning house, but it is ugly business.

The breaking news is that Xi just got rid of his top general in a shocking PLA leadership crisis. Think about that for a second. This is the guy in charge of the military. The guy with the keys to the rockets. And the big boss just tossed him out. That is not a small move. That is a desperate move. It is like firing your bodyguard while you are walking down a dark alley. You only do that if you think the bodyguard is the one who is going to mug you.

The American intelligence analysts are loving this. They are sitting in their offices, reading reports, and probably laughing. They say Xi has a "remarkable level of fear." That is spy talk for "this guy is losing his mind." The American side sees this as weakness. They think it’s great that the other team is fighting amongst themselves. But they are missing the point.

A scared leader is a dangerous leader. Think about a scared dog. A scared dog bites. A scared dog snaps at anything that moves. Now imagine that dog has nuclear weapons and a massive army. That is not funny. That is terrifying. When leaders get paranoid, they stop making sense. They make bad choices because they are only thinking about survival. They aren't thinking about the economy, or the people, or the future. They are just thinking about holding onto the chair.

This is the problem with power. It drives people crazy. It happens everywhere. Look at our own politicians. They are obsessed with power too. They will say anything, do anything, and sell anyone out just to get a few more votes. The Right calls the Left evil. The Left calls the Right stupid. It is all a game. In China, the game is just played with higher stakes and less noise. But the sickness is the same. It is the sickness of wanting to be the King.

History is full of guys like this. They build a huge empire, and then they spend the rest of their lives hiding in a bunker because they don't trust the people they hired. It is pathetic, really. You spend your whole life climbing the ladder, stepping on faces to get to the top. And when you finally get there, you can't even enjoy the view because you are too busy watching the door.

The report says this is all about "power plays." Of course it is. It is never about helping the little guy. Do you think this general getting fired helps the factory worker in Beijing? Do you think it helps the farmer? No. It changes nothing for them. The rich and powerful play their games, and the rest of us just have to hope the building doesn't fall down.

Xi is tightening his grip. He wants total control. But here is the thing about squeezing something too hard: eventually, it breaks. Or it slips through your fingers. You can't force loyalty. You can't force trust. You can only force silence. And right now, the silence in those government halls must be deafening.

So, don't envy these people. Don't look at the world leaders and wish you were them. They are miserable. They are paranoid. They are trapped in a prison of their own making. Xi Jinping is the most powerful man in China, and he is afraid of his own shadow. It is a sad joke, and we are all the punchline.
