A highly detailed, cinematic style image of a pristine Swiss mountain village enclosed inside a glass snow globe. Outside the glass, a large, rusty padlock locks the globe shut. The background is dark and moody. Inside the globe, the lighting is perfect and golden. The contrast between the protected inside and the dark outside is sharp.

Here we go again. Another country has decided it is too special to share its toys. This time, it is Switzerland. You know Switzerland. It is the place with the nice watches, the expensive chocolate, and the banks that hide money for terrible people. It is a very clean, very rich, and very smug place. And now, driven by the **Switzerland population cap** debate, they want to put a big “Do Not Enter” sign on the front lawn.

Here is the news. The people in charge of Switzerland are going to hold a vote. A referendum. They are asking the people if they want to enforce a hard **Swiss immigration limit**. They want to stop the number of people living there at 10 million via the **'No to 10 Million Switzerland' initiative**. Right now, they have almost 9 million people. So, the door is closing fast. This whole thing was started by a right-wing party. Of course it was. These are the types of people who think their mountains will stop being pointy if they hear a different language at the grocery store.

The government there did not want to do this. They tried to say no. But in a **Swiss direct democracy**, if you get enough signatures, you can force a vote on pretty much anything. People say this is the best way to run a country. I say it is just a way for angry mobs to make bad decisions with a pen instead of a pitchfork. So now, in June, they vote. If it passes, the government has to rip up treaties and fight with their neighbors to stop people from moving in.

Let’s look at why they are doing this. The excuse is always the same. They say the trains are too full. They say the rent is too high. They say the beautiful nature is getting ruined by too many feet walking on it. It is the same whining we hear everywhere. “Oh no, I have to wait in line for five minutes. The country is broken!” It is pathetic. These are the most comfortable people on the planet. They live in a fortress of money. And yet, they act like they are victims.

This right-wing party is playing a smart, dirty game. They are not just saying “we hate foreigners.” That sounds mean. Instead, they are pivoting to **environmental sustainability** arguments. They are saying “we love nature.” They say too many people will ruin the green hills and the clean lakes. It is a trick. They are using the language of the Left to sell the hate of the Right. It is cynical. It is gross. And it works.

But here is the joke. It is a very funny joke. Switzerland needs these people. They need immigrants to solve the looming **Swiss labor shortage**. Their own people are getting old. They are retiring. They are not having enough babies. Who is going to do the work? Who is going to build the houses? Who is going to take care of the old people in the nursing homes? Who is going to serve the coffee? The Swiss certainly aren’t going to do it. They are too busy counting their gold bars.

Business leaders are freaking out. They know this is stupid. They know that if you stop workers from coming in, the economy stops working. But the voters do not care about math. Voters care about feelings. They feel like things are changing, and they hate change. They want the world to freeze in place. They want to live in a snow globe where nothing ever moves and nothing ever gets dirty.

The Left and the Center parties are useless here, too. They have been in charge while the housing prices went up. They sat around and let the problems get bad enough that the Right could swoop in with this crazy 10 million number. They let the anger build up. Now they are scrambling, trying to explain why immigration is good. But nobody listens to logic when they are angry about their rent check.

This is just human nature on display. It is ugly. Everyone wants to get into the lifeboat. But the second they climb aboard and grab a seat, they want to push everyone else into the water. “Sorry, full up,” they say. “Go find your own boat.” Switzerland is just a really, really nice lifeboat with leather seats and a mini-bar. And the people sitting in it are looking at the people swimming in the water with disgust.

It does not matter if you are on the Left or the Right. You should look at this and laugh. The Right thinks they can stop the world from turning by passing a law. They think a piece of paper will stop people from moving where the money is. The Left thinks they can ignore the anger of the people until it goes away. They are all idiots. This vote in June is not going to solve anything. Even if they vote to close the borders, the problems will stay. The rent will still be high. The trains will still be late sometimes. And the people will still be miserable, because that is what people do best. They will just have fewer people to blame for it.
