A gritty, cynical illustration of a cardboard box sitting on a wet New York City sidewalk, looking sad and out of place, with a small Scottish flag sticker peeling off the side. In the background, blurry politicians in suits are shaking hands and ignoring the box. High contrast, noir style, muted colors.

So, here we are again. Another day, another useless stunt by the people in charge. New York City has a new mayor, Zohran Mamdani. He has big ideas. He wants to save the world. And what is his big plan to save the poor children of New York? A box.

Yes, a literal cardboard box.

You cannot make this up. The government of Scotland, all the way across the cold ocean, decided to send Mayor Mamdani a present. It is called a 'baby box.' In Scotland, they give these to every pregnant woman. It has some clothes, a thermometer, maybe a blanket, and a mattress. The baby sleeps in the box. That is the big idea. It is supposed to make everyone equal.

So, Shirley-Anne Somerville, who is the 'social justice secretary' in Scotland, put one of these boxes in the mail. She sent it to New York. She said this shows a 'shared commitment to tackling child poverty.'

Let’s stop right there. Let’s really look at this. Two politicians are high-fiving each other over a cardboard box. This is what passes for leadership now. They think if you give a poor person a free onesie and a place to put their baby that looks like a FedEx package, you have solved the problem.

You have to laugh, or you will scream. New York City is one of the most expensive places on Earth. A one-room apartment costs more than most people make in a month. The subway is broken. The streets are a mess. Food costs a fortune. And the solution is a box?

Mayor Mamdani ran his campaign on this. He looked at Scotland and said, 'Wow, that is genius.' He calls it a 'baby basket.' He thinks this is the future. But let’s be honest. This is not about helping babies. This is about looking busy. It is about appearing to care.

Think about the effort here. Someone in Scotland had to pack this box. They had to put it on a plane. They burned jet fuel to fly a cardboard box thousands of miles to a city that is drowning in garbage. Does New York not have cardboard? Do we not have blankets? We have Amazon warehouses the size of small towns. We do not need imported cardboard from Edinburgh.

But that is not the point, is it? The point is the photo op. The point is so Somerville can say, 'Look, we are inspiring the world.' And Mamdani can say, 'Look, I have international friends.' Meanwhile, the actual poor people in New York are still poor. The box does not pay the rent. The box does not buy groceries for the next eighteen years. The box is just a box.

It is deeply insulting when you think about it. These politicians look at a struggling family and think, 'You know what they need? A souvenir from Europe.' It is the ultimate band-aid on a bullet wound. It is the government saying, 'We will not fix the economy. We will not lower housing costs. But here is a free hat for your kid. Good luck.'

And let’s talk about the symbolism. It is perfect, actually. It is too perfect. The government wants to train us from day one. You start your life in a box. Then you go to school in a box. Then you work in a cubicle box. Then you live in a tiny apartment box. And finally, they put you in a wooden box in the ground.

Mamdani and his friends in Scotland are just getting the process started early. They want the baby to get used to the feeling of being contained. They want the next generation to be comfortable with receiving crumbs from the state and saying 'thank you.'

This is why I hate politics. It is all theater. It is a show for ugly people. The Right says the poor are lazy. The Left says the poor just need a gift basket. Neither side actually wants to change anything. They just want to keep their jobs. They want to feel important.

So now the box is in New York. I am sure it will sit in City Hall. Maybe they will put it in a glass case. Everyone will clap. They will write papers about the 'Baby Basket Initiative.' Consultants will get paid millions to study how to hand out the boxes.

And somewhere in the Bronx, a single mom will still be wondering how to pay the electric bill. But don't worry. The Mayor has a cardboard box from Scotland. Everything is going to be fine.
