Norwegian Nobel Committee Reminds Laureates That While Peace Is Its Own Reward, The Medal Is Currently Trading At $4.8 Million

OSLO — Responding to recent inquiries regarding the transferability of the world’s most prestigious humanitarian honor, the Norwegian Nobel Committee issued a press release Friday clarifying that while bringing an end to international conflict is priceless, the 18-carat gold medal received for doing so has a very firm Buy-It-Now price on eBay.
'We would like to remind all future and current laureates that the Nobel Peace Prize is a sacred symbol of fraternity between nations, but strictly speaking, it also melts down to about $8,000 in raw bullion and fetches significantly more if you find an oligarch looking to rehabilitate their public image,' said Committee Chair Berit Reiss-Andersen, noting that while the bylaws technically forbid selling the award, the Committee 'totally gets it' if a laureate wants to trade world peace for a mid-sized yacht.
The statement went on to provide a helpful list of auction houses that specialize in fencing stolen valor, advising laureates to wait at least six months after the ceremony before listing the item on Craigslist under 'shiny face coaster.' At press time, a Sotheby’s catalog had listed the 2023 medal as part of a 'Dictator Starter Pack' bundle that included a mahogany desk and a pair of aviator sunglasses.
